This is a list of the modalities I have studied and incorporate into my sessions. My sessions may include one or all of these types of massage, depending on your needs. Feel free to suggest any that speak to you.
Neuromuscular Massage Therapy (NMT) - is a series of treatment protocols that cooperate with the central nervous system to work on nerves in the body to achieve release. Injury or stress to the body causes nerves to increase their impulses, making the body sensitive to pain and dysfunction. NMT is a thorough program of recovery which uses massage therapy, flexibility stretching, and home care to ease or end pain. NMT uses a resisted stretch called a muscle energy technique that improves reange of motion through work with the neurons in the tendons.
Trigger Point Therapy (TrPT) - are small, hyper-sensitive spots in the muscles that may be sore or radiate pain when they are pressed. The pain is due to excessive nerve stimulation or a muscle that is aggravated by stress of any sort. Pressure on the trigger point may cause pain in the immediate area or may cause referred pain if the areas are located near motor nerve points. TPT's purpose is get rid of pain and to re-educate the muscles into pain-free habits. The target muscle may be stiff, weak, have restricted range of motion, or be resistant to stretch. Stimulation of trigger points might also cause spasm, vasoconstriction, coldness, sweating, hypersecretion, and other symptoms.
Deep Tissue - is used to reach the connective tissue (the deeper layer of muscles) under the superficial layer of fascia on the body to release chronic tension. Deep Tissue uses higher pressure, slower strokes and concentrates on specific areas of the body in comparison to relaxation or Swedish massage techniques. Slow and deliberate movement is provided and it is used by athletes or individuals whose jobs require them to do a lot of physical activity. It also can be beneficial on injuries or emotional trauma that may be kept in the phsyical body.
Shiatsu - is a Japanese bodywork practice that uses principles of acupressure. Shiatsu means "finger pressure" and, as the name implies, it uses finger and palm pressure to energize pathways called meridians in order to enhance the flow of "qi" (vitality, stamina, and energy). Shiatsu can increase circulation of blood and lymph, reduce muscles stiffness, and release stress and fatigue that accumulate in the body. Shiatsu is conducted with the client fully clothed, usually in comfortable clothing that allows the client to move. No oil is used.
Swedish Massage - or classical massage, is used to reduce pain and joint stiffness, increase circulation and oxygen flow, and release toxins from the muscles. It also is used to relieve stress and improve mood, providing overall physical wellness and mental well-being. Pressure during Swedish massage can range from light to firm, and many therapist will use deep tissue or trigger point therapy to aid specific attention to certain areas of the body.
Sports Massage - it is a type of Swedish massage that stimulates circulation of blood and lymph fluids. It can also include some deep tissue therapy or trigger point therapy to break down knots in muscles, and stretching to increase flexibility and range of motion. Generally, massage therapist will focus on the area that is in pain or stiff/inflexible. Although, sports massage was designed with athletes in mind, it also can be very useful for individuals with many types of muscular injuries, chronic pain, or range-of-motion difficulties.
Pregnancy Massage - Many of the strokes techniques are the same as in a normal Swedish or relaxation massage. It has many benefits for the client. It can help relieve muscle cramps, spasm, and myofascial pain. The increase of blood flow and lymph circulation can reduce swelling and edema, and can reduce stress on weight-bearing joints. Pregnancy massage can induce relaxation and reduce stress on mother-to-be, which can help improve the outcome of labor and delivery and provides the new mother with physical and emotional reprieve from the stress of mothering. Unless she has other disease or conditions that counter-indicate massage, pregnancy massage can be very useful both physically and mentially for the mother-to-be.
Acupressure - uses a physical pressure points on the surface of the skin to stimulate the body's natural means of curing itself. Pressing points on the meridian lines relieves muscle tension and increases circulation. Stimulation of points encourages the body to release endorphins. Other effects may include the release of anti-inflammatory and eurphoric substances, increased circulation and decreased inflammation. The goal is to restore health and balance the energy flow. It is said to help with many diseases or ailments, such as back or muscle aches, constipation, cramps, ulcer pain, and sinus problems. It can ease stress and promote overall wellness.
Myofasical Massage - is used to relax or loosen the fascia and connective tissue in the body. Fascia is the soft tissue component of connective tissue that protects and supports many structures within the body, in particular muscle. It is a thin layer that naturally can stretch and move without restriction, creating a constant pull that stabilizes the structures it surrounds.
Lymphatic Massage - is gentle, relaxing form of massage that helps the body's lymphatic system get moving again while supporting immune function. It can be valuable in cases of edema, sports injury or for people experiencing poor immune system or those suffering from a lack of energy. It helps eliminate excessive fluid in the tissues and to encourage healing by increasing the rate of waste disposal. Lymphatic massage is a slow, gentle process that aims to help relaxation massge.
Chair Massage - is a brief bodywork session, usually a shiatsu-based routine mixed with some light stretching or reflexology (on hands and scalp). Sessions may last between five and 30 minutes (no more than 40 minutes is recommended to prevent blood flow constriction) to accommodate client's schedule. It is designed to be "on-site massage" for the workplace.
Somatic Education-Bodywork - (in the traditoin of Thomas Hanna) clients who prefer an alternative option than massage (but can also be integrated with massage). It is a safe, gentle and common sense approach to reverse chronic pain. It is an effective form of neuromuscular (mind-body training) movement re-education. Client will learn to regain both awareness, sensation, and motor control of muscles — an educational process that can be achieved through movement. Through Somatic Education the brain will learn how to relax and move muscles properly. The benefits of Somatic Education is to release or reverse neuromuscular pain, improve mobility, strength, coordination, posture, and appearance. It also can relieve chronic aches and disabilities associated with as: headaches, sciatica, painful joints and muscles, neck, shoulder and back pain, hip, knee and foot pain, repetitive use injuries, poor posture, accident traumas and whiplash, breathing problems, and frozen shoulder syndrome.
